The village of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, has announced the race dates for three major triathlon events during 2010. Prairie Springs Park and Lake Andrea will host the Pleasant Prairie Adult and Junior Triathlons, June 26-27. Prairie Springs Park will also be the host site for the Trek Women’s Triathlon, July 10-11, and the Danskin Women’s Triathlon Series, August 21-22.

Registration for the Trek Women’s Triathlon is already under way at www.trekwomenstriathlonseries.com. The Trek race is expected to draw 3,500 participants.

Registration for the Pleasant Prairie Triathlons opened January 15, and Danskin was expected to start taking entries shortly thereafter.

In 2009, the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon drew roughly 1,500 athletes to the area. A similar number are expected in June this year.

The Danskin Women’s Triathlon is anticipating some 2,750 participants during the month of August. More information about the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon can be found at www.PleasantPrairieTriathlon.com. Information regarding the Danskin Women’s Triathlon can be found at www.danskintriathlon.net.

“Prairie Springs Park and Lake Andrea have become known as a premiere venue for multisport events,” said Carol Willke, recreation director for the village of Pleasant Prairie. “We are so pleased to be able to host these events in our community. Not only are they a boost for local businesses, but they provide a challenging and fulfilling experience for athletes, volunteers and spectators.”

The races also reach out to the broader community through charitable giving components. This year a portion of the proceeds from the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon will benefit youths and adults with special needs who are served through the Therapeutic Recreation Program at LakeView RecPlex. The Trek Triathlon team will partner with Team Survivor and a national cancer research charity through a participant pledge program. The Danskin Triathlon team has yet to announce their partnership with a community charity.

New pool to host youth swim meet

LakeView RecPlex and the Kenosha Barracuda Swim Team will welcome more than 700 swimmers from five Midwestern states for the USA Swimming Central Zone Age Group Championships. The meet will take place August 6-9 and will be held in the new competition pool currently under construction at RecPlex.

Competitors in the Central Zone Championship are ages 14 and younger. They must qualify for the competition by meeting high-level entry time standards.

USA Swimming, which is the governing body for competitive swimming across the country, is the group responsible for selecting the Olympic swim team as well as other teams that represent the United States. The USA Swimming Central Zone encompasses 15 states, including Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin; athletes from which will be competing in the August meet at RecPlex.

Late last year, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism awarded the Kenosha Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau a $9,950 Ready, Set, Go Grant to help bring the event and its swimmers to the area. Ready, Set, Go grants support the establishment of competitive sporting events in the state.

RecPlex began construction of a new 50-meter, Olympic-size pool last June. The competition pool is scheduled for completion this coming June. The village has chosen to construct the pool to USA Swimming certification standards with the goal of being considered for larger, high-level competitive swimming events. The pool will have seating for approximately 600 spectators.

The new pool at RecPlex will also serve the local community by providing opportunities for lap lane swimming for members and guests, expanded swimming lessons, triathlon training programs, indoor triathlons and more.
